From the beginning, Mr. Trump’s admirers have compared him to a paradigmatic outlaw hero, Robin Hood. Mr. Trump may not deserve the comparison — critics of his 2017 tax cut called it a reverse Robin Hood — but myth has a way of overstepping mere fact. Did Jesse James really pay off a widow’s mortgage, then rob the greedy banker who took the cash? For that matter, did Robin Hood really rob the rich and give to the poor? Like Joaquín Murrieta, the 19th-century Mexican laborer working in California who, according to legend, responded to injustice by vowing that he “would live henceforth for revenge,” Mr. Trump has promised to avenge the downtrodden.

The headquarters of the Spanish bank BBVA are seen in Madrid, Spain. Talk of a tie-up between Spain's second and fourth-largest banks comes almost four years after previous negotiations collapsed. The potential merger follows a period of consolidation in the sector as Spanish banks seek to cut costs and boost scale. For BBVA, a tie-up would boost its domestic business and increase lending to small and medium-sized companies, where Sabadell is strong. Spain's Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo told Spanish news agency EFE that it was essential to preserve a competitive landscape in the financial sector.

The two men rang the bell at the Resource Center Matamoros, a migrant aid group in the Mexican border city, and, speaking in broken Spanish, said they were looking for volunteer work. Security footage shared with The New York Times shows the pair standing on the sidewalk in shorts and flip flops as they talked via speakerphone with Gaby Zavala, the center’s founder. After about half an hour, they left. Ms. Zavala didn’t know it yet, but the men were not volunteers. They were provocateurs building an online following with hidden camera exposés and ambushes that claim to uncover abuse and election fraud in the American immigration system.

CNN —A showdown between Mexico and Ecuador begins on Tuesday at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the culmination of weeks of recrimination over an incident that saw Ecuadorian forces raid Mexico’s embassy in Quito in April, to arrest a former vice president who had been seeking asylum. Mexico is suing Ecuador at the world court over the armed raid, saying it violated the Vienna Convention, a United Nations treaty on diplomatic relations. The incident drew widespread international condemnation, but Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa remains unrepentant, telling CNN affiliate SBS news that he does not regret how Glas was arrested. Meanwhile, Ecuador filed a lawsuit of its own at the ICJ against Mexico over its decision to grant asylum to Glas. The diplomatic spat has seen a host of Latin American leaders across the political spectrum rally around Mexico, and several nations sever ties with Ecuador.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday said companies that perpetually generate "self-help" are poised to do well in this market. In other words, they find ways to grow and perform well despite what might be happening in the broader economy. "When we're looking for reasons to buy a stock in this environment, we want companies that generate constant self-help. This kind of "self-help" may be the "antidote" to the big-picture worries weighing on the market, Cramer said. "It takes a special kind of stock to do well when the economy's slowing while inflation just won't quit," he said.
